![]() ![]() It is an observation that, pre-pandemic, would have sounded dystopian but which now, in the era of video calls, financial speculation and the metaverse, becomes extraordinarily realistic. ![]() At an economic level is therefore worth more in its digital version than in the physical one, of presence in the world. With Useless Bodies?, Elmgreen & Dragset question the physical role of the body in the post-industrial era starting from the observation that, in the 21st century, it has acquired the status of a product whose data is collected and sold by Big Tech. And we, who think back to this question mark after having seen the exhibition, come to say: no, we are not useless yet but only if we remember that it is physical life that gives value to what we build around us. They don’t give us certainty because the task of art is to leave an empty space for the viewer to interpret. We may be useless as bodies, Elmgreen & Draget seem to say, but maybe we are not. The most heartening thing about Useless Bodies?, the exhibition-installation by Elmgreen & Dragset at Fondazione Prada, is the question mark of the title.
